Developed as a casual range of wines, the Watagan series are principally made from grapes grown on Mount Vincent Estates Lower Hunter Valley vineyard. Named after the Watagan Ranges that surround Mount Vincent, the labels each depict separate sections of a large landscape painting that hangs in the private members room at the Lodge.
The art was commissioned in 1994 and was painted over a 12 month period by Lord Charles Gosford, an English Earl and graduate of the Royal Academy. Charles came to Australia in the early 1990's for a festival in the town that bears his name and never returned to Old Blighty. To this day, he resides in Gosford on the Central Coast of NSW.
Tropical fruits and passionfruit are supported by citric characters on both the nose and palate of this wine. With 'sherbet acid' on the fore-palate it makes a very refreshing afternoon drink.
The aromas of this wine are akin to nectarines and wild honey. This adds to the flavours of sweet peaches and refreshing passionfruit characters on the palate balanced by full fruity acidity.
This Rosé has delightful rose petal, toffee apple and tangerine touches on the nose as suggested by its colour. The palate is soft and fruity with the spiciness of young Shiraz lifted by citrus characters.
This Watagan shiraz is medium density colour, with soft berry fruit with subtle oak and pepper aromas. These are integrated with the blackberry, savoury Hunter Shiraz fruit. A very good alcohol weight carries the rich flavours.
The garnet red colour precedes aromas of dusty fruit of plum and fleshy black cherries. The cherry and Ribena flavours are supported by the structure of supple ripe tannins and integrated American Oak.
The wine is rich with marmalade and dried fruits beautifully balanced by crisp citrus and green apple acidity.
